The House of Representatives has reversed its decision on the second reading of a bill that seeks to remove immunity from the Vice President, state governors, and their deputies.
The bill was introduced to fight corruption, prevent abuse of power, and improve accountability in public office. However, lawmakers decided to revisit the bill to allow more debate on certain provisions.
On Wednesday, 42 constitutional amendment bills passed the second reading in the House, including the one to remove immunity for top government officials.
On Thursday, another bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution passed its second reading. It proposes creating the position of Prime Minister as head of government while the President serves as head of state. This bill is part of 32 constitutional amendments discussed on the same day.
Other proposed amendments include reserving special seats for women in the National and State Assemblies and reducing the time required to resolve pre-election disputes. Another bill seeks to establish pre-election tribunals and regulate how lawmakers can be suspended from legislative duties.
