The Administrator of Rivers State, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has called on the Senate to throw its weight behind his government’s development plans by providing the needed legislative support and resources.
During a visit by the Senate Committee on Works to the Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday, Ibas emphasized the importance of stable socioeconomic activities and improved infrastructure to boost Rivers’ economy and the quality of life for residents.
The Senate delegation, led by Senator Barinada Mpigi (Rivers South-East), was joined by representatives of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, including the company’s MD, Dr. Peer Lubasch.
Ibas thanked the delegation for the visit, describing it as a strong sign of the National Assembly’s commitment to the progress of Rivers State. He noted that his administration is laser-focused on tackling insecurity, job creation, and fixing infrastructure gaps.
“We’re finalizing a new budget that mirrors our dedication to healthcare, education, social services, and fast-tracked infrastructure development,” he said.
He also mentioned that the budget is people-focused and designed to promote job creation while investing in key sectors like agriculture, technology, and public works.
“We need your continued support to access funding and secure laws that will help bring these plans to life. Your partnership is vital to ensure Rivers remains on a path of peace, progress, and prosperity for future generations,” Ibas urged.
He also stressed the importance of Federal Government support in accelerating key federal projects within the state. Ibas appealed to the senators to remember the vital role Rivers plays in the national economy.
“Rivers State is the nation’s treasure base. We host critical infrastructure—roads, bridges, ports, oil and gas facilities, refineries, and more. But like many other states, we face challenges expanding and maintaining these due to limited resources.”
Since stepping into office on March 20, 2025, Ibas said his focus has been on restoring peace and winning the trust of citizens. He revealed that his administration has been in close talks with traditional rulers, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to create a peaceful environment for investment and growth.
Meanwhile, Senator Mpigi reaffirmed the Senate’s support for Rivers’ development. He explained that the committee was in the state to inspect key federal projects, including the Bodo-Bonny Link Road and the ongoing Coastal Road project, which is currently 40% completed.
Mpigi also encouraged Ibas to continue prioritizing security and infrastructure, stressing that protecting lives and properties is key to unlocking development in the state.
As Rivers gears up for growth, all eyes are now on the National Assembly to match the state’s energy with funding and supportive policies.
